In the Beginning

I never thought that I would be sitting at my desk creating a blog, but here I am. Wow. I have mixed feelings about this! The thought of my thoughts and words being out on the world wide web is a little scary, but here we go!
This semester, I have chosen a topic of research that I have had some interest in for some time. Being a kindergarten teacher, one of the main things I teach, along with reading, writing, math, science, and social studies, is social skills. Appropriate social skills are so important to have and something that kids can certainly struggle with. I also feel that appropriate social skills is something that we are starting to see less and less of in our society. My husband sees it in his job every day. He tells me horror stories of young adults joining his team at his job and them lacking so many important social skills with clients, and then he has to clean up the "mess". Along with a decrease of social skills and appropriate social development in children, I feel like we are also seeing an increase in the demand for and the use of technology. Now don't get me wrong, I LOVE technology and use it every day in my home life and in my classroom. I am not trying to be the new Ted Kaczynski! However, it did make me start to wonder if the increased use of technology has had anything to do with the lack of appropriate social development that we are seeing in a large majority of today's youth. At this time, there are not a lot of published educational journals discussing the negative impact that technology may be having on the social development of children, at least not enough for a literature review. I also did not want to just focus on the "bad", because I do believe that technology can truly be used for so much good. This resulted in my proposed (as of right now) research topic of The Impact of Technology on Today's Students.
Here are some tips that I have found helpful when using APA formatting and creating my citation/reference page:

  • Reference lists must be double-spaced, with a hanging indent
  • Alphabetize letter by letter
  • Alphabetize prefixes such as Mc and Mac literally
  • Alphabetize surnames that contain articles and prepositions (de, la, du, von, etc.) according to the rules of the language of origin
  • Alphabetize items with numerals as if the numerals were spelled out
  • Alphabetize group authors such as associations or agencies by the first significant word of the name, and use the full official name, not an acronym
  • If the author is designated as Anonymous, then the entry is alphabetized as if Anonymous were a true name
  • If there is no author, the entry is alphabetized by the first significant word in the title
That is all I have for this week! Stay tuned for more :)
